Comprehensive and Robust Network Support to Joint Universities Computer Centre provided by WTT

With the emergence of e-learning, ICT applications have broadened the teaching approach and transformed the pedagogical approach. A stable, high speed, and reliable network as well as quality ICT services are important to schools and universities. These aspects of ICT are also essential in improving the standard of teaching and research, improving school administration, and strengthening network safety. So ICT adoption is important to the long-term development of the educational sector.

HARNET is Hong Kong’s first academic and research network linking up eight government-funded tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and further connects with the global network. What is more, it is being upgraded and expanded continuously. The Joint Universities Computer Centre (JUCC) is committed to fostering strong co-operation between higher education member institutions, providing cutting-edge IT facilities and support services for the advancement of academic and research and excellence. HARNET has meticulous standards to speed, stability, and safety. Comprehensive ICT and professional technical support are indispensable in meeting the needs of high volume data transmission and mission critical applications.

Seamless Connection of Eight Tertiary Institutions Achieving Great Compatibility

Mr Kam Poon, Vice President of Business Market of WTT, highlighted the fact that as there are eight universities with their own internal networks, their data centers and network operation centers are scattered across Hong Kong in various districts. Each of them has its own specific broadband network requirements. Connecting their networks seamlessly and ensuring that they are all compatible with each other was a challenge for WTT. Being the trusted partner of Hong Kong business across various industries, WTT possesses extensive experience in building complex network structures requiring seamless connection and full compatibility. WTT could therefore fulfill stringent requirements of JUCC by surmounting the unique network structure of all the universities and addressing their specific needs, and eventually winning the partnership opportunity.

Network Transparency to Facilitate Quality Monitoring

Another challenge for universities is their internal network management. Security threats on the internet with hackers commonly using ransomware attacks such as Locky and DDoS disrupt the operations of servers that cause an increase in network latency, and affect daily operations. WTT is experienced in data and system protection as well as network security. It also possesses a reliable network infrastructure plus comprehensive ICT solutions that can ensure HARNET to closely and proactively identify, monitor, and block DDoS attacks.

Enhanced e-Learning by Promoting ICT Adoption in Schools

In addition to JUCC, WTT has been serving the education sector for many years by aligning our ICT support according to the Strengthening Schools’ Administration Management (SAM) grant requirements and the Direct Subsidy Scheme for the purpose of enhancing school administration management, catering for the needs of both teaching and academic research as well as also addressing students’ needs. Over hundreds primary schools, secondary schools, and all of the local universities are using WTT’s ICT services supported by our high-speed fibre network.

Moreover, WTT has become the entrusted Wi-Fi solution partner to over hundreds schools soon after the launch of The Fourth Strategy on IT in Education - Enhancing Schools’ Wi-Fi Infrastructure in 2014 by the Education Bureau.

Significant Progress Achieved for JUCC Projects through Professional and Effective ICT Solutions

Mr. Choi Chan Hung, Senior Computer Officer of the Information Technology Services Centre at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was very impressed by WTT’s flexible arrangements. He told us, “Members of HARNET need to handle flexible bandwidth subscription of high volume data transfer and to ensure data can be processed promptly. They took the sophisticated requirement of higher education into consideration and customised network solutions for us. For example, special arrangement was made during non-peak season in the summer holiday to allocate HARNET resources better.”

Mr Choi mentioned JUCC has established four goals at the beginning of our collaboration. Firstly, improve network reliability and stability. Secondly, increase efficiency. Thirdly, enlarge flexibility and lastly, ensure capacity has been reserved for future network expansion. “WTT is able to help JUCC accomplish all of these goals and that is the reason why JUCC chose to work with WTT.” He expects JUCC will continue to reinforce the development and IT application in the Hong Kong education sector through the professional support provided by WTT. Teachers, students, researchers, and administrative staff can focus their efforts and spend their time striving for excellence in academic and research fields while leaving all ICT related issues to the professionals.

Dr. Samuel Kwan, Director of the Information Technology Services Center at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology took up his role as Director of JUCC in July of this year, stated, “The ICT requirements of the education sector are meticulous and stringent. Stability, high speed, and flexibility are basic requirements. WTT is capable of coping with the trends on cloud computing, big data, and mobile cloud development as well as addressing all our ICT needs. Partnering with WTT allows us to focus on education development, training, and research as well as providing us with a hassle-free ICT experience.”
